After  Receiving Your Residence Permit

After receiving your residence permit, you can continue living in Portugal and maintain your legal status through timely renewals. The renewal process includes preparing documents, submitting an application to AIMA, and waiting for approval, which may take up to 60 days. Upon approval, your residence permit can be extended for an additional 3 years.

Over time, maintaining legal residence in Portugal allows you to apply for permanent residency or citizenship. After 5 years of legal residence, you may become eligible, provided you meet all requirements, including passing a Portuguese language exam at A2 level and submitting the necessary documents. The citizenship application process may take from 6 to 16 months.
